AEARU Signs up to Hefei Statement

The Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) has joined with other leading alliances of research universities to sign up to the Hefei Statement on the Characteristics of Contemporary Research Universities.
At AEARU 19th Annual General Meeting, 33rd Board of Directors Meeting and 34th Board of Directors Meeting, it was approved that AEARU would co-sign the Hefei Statement, contributing to the cooperation beyond borders.
The joint statement was first made by the Association of American Universities (AAU), the Consortium of China 9 Research Universities (C9), the Group of Eight Australia (Go8), and the League of European Research Universities (LERU) to enable the fulfillment of research and education mission of research universities so as to meet global challenges.
President Chen Jun of Nanjing University, Chairperson of AEARU, said:
“AEARU has always been committed to working within our association for not only the development of higher education and research but also for the opening up of a new era leading to cultural, economic and social progress in the East Asian region. Now, we decided to side with the other global academic associations that share the common mission, that is, to play an active and effective role in solving problems faced by human beings in the fast-changing world and bringing benefits to people in all continents of the world.”
In February and March this year, the Russell Group of 24 leading universities in the UK and the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities have announced the endorsement of Hefei Statement respectively. Upon the invitation of LERU, AEARU has joined with AAU, C9, Go8, LERU, Russell Group and U15 to form a global network of research universities
